Matt Irwin MD

Passionate about surgery, research & health advocacy

Dr Matt Irwin is a medical officer with Northern Sydney Local Health District, encompassing the Royal North Shore Hospital, a Quaternary referral hospital in Australia. The district provides services for over 850,000 including 20% of the aged population in NSW.  His passion for rural training and healthcare has afforded him accolades including awards for “Outstanding Commitment Toward Rural and Remote Health”, Australia Day Citizen of the Year, NSW Rural Achiever and membership on multiple independent and government advisory committees including for the National Advisory Committee to the Department of Health, Australian Medical Association and Australian Salaried Medical Officers Federation.

A passionate researcher, Dr Irwin was selected as 1 of 2 to represent Australia at the Nobel Prize Ceremony and Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar in 2005.  There he dined with the Swedish Royal Family, Professor Barry Marshall AC and Dr Robin Warren AC and presented his research to a small sample of Nobel Laureates.  He has since published a few articles and presented at the 15th Quadrennial World Congress of Anaesthesiologists in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  Dr Irwin was a former Staff Coordinator for the National Youth Science Forum through which his invitation to the Nobel Prize Ceremony was made possible.

        Medical Officer for Northern Sydney Local Health District, encompassing the Royal North Shore Hospital, a quaternary referral hospital in Australia. The district provides services for over 850,000 including 20% of the aged population in NSW. During my tenure I will complete: 36 weeks of accredited general surgical experience including night shifts, 24 weeks at an accredited quaternary hospital and trauma centre, 24 weeks at 2 accredited regional hospitals including night shifts, and 12 weeks of accredited Plastic and Reconstructive surgical experience.

          Director of Communications for Future Health Leaders Inc. including coordination of the FHL 2015 National Conference which challenged and inspired the future health workforce to implement and create a sustainable health system.

            The Doctors-in-training Committee is a reporting committee of the AMA (NSW) and meets regularly to discuss issues that concern medical students and recent graduates. The Committee reports to AMA (NSW) Council and is involved in a number of important professional issues.

                  The National Health Sector Managers and Leaders Conference provides an opportune forum for leaders within the Australian health services sector to examine the on-going complexities of personal and organisational leadership. The annual event is organised by The Australian School of Applied Management (ASAM), one of Australia’s most respected providers of management and leadership education.                   Medical Officer for Hunter New England Local Health District which provides services for over 850,000 people including 20% of the NSW indigenous population. During this time I completed: 58 weeks of accredited surgical experience including night shifts, 55 weeks at 5 accredited rural and regional hospitals including night shifts, 22 weeks of accredited emergency experience at a tertiary hospital and trauma centre, and 12 weeks of accredited Intensive Care experience.

                        Incorporating 2 Australian medical students and a number of industry stakeholders, the National Advisory Committee guided the Australian Government on the Bonded Medical Places (BMP) Scheme affecting 25% of domestic medical students. Students under the scheme must work in a District of Workforce Shortage equal to the length of their degree upon obtaining Fellowship. Until July 2015 they were assisted via a conference program, online discussions, forums, networking events and telephone and face-to-face support.

                              Rural Appreciation Weekend is an annual event that has provided over 1500 medical and allied health students an opportunity to experience life on the land in the hope it will encourage them to practice rurally.

                                Elected as 1 of 2 Executive Councillors representing medical officers on the National Rural Health Student Network (NRHSN) Council. NRHSN is a multidisciplinary health network representing the future of rural health in Australia. It is comprised of more than 9,000 members from 28 university Rural Health Clubs from all states and territories in Australia.

                                  Rural Australian Medical Undergraduate Scholarship (RAMUS) is a scheme for students with a rural background who are studying medicine at university. Scholars are selected through an annual competitive application process on the basis of their rural background, financial need and demonstrated commitment to working in rural Australia. Ten percent of scholarships are reserved for successful appellants. The Appeals Panel is independent and comprises 2 Australian students and 3 stakeholders.
